What are the Essential Tips for Cleaning Linear Guides?

As a core component of machine tools, Hojama's precision Linear Guideways play a critical role in supporting and guiding components for precise movement, as well as clamping and positioning. The guiding accuracy and movement stability during their operation directly affect the machining accuracy of the machine. However, during equipment operation, a large amount of corrosive dust and smoke pollutants generated by the workpiece being processed, if they accumulate on the surface of the linear motion guide for a long time, will not only significantly affect the machining accuracy of the equipment but also form corrosion points on the guide rail surface, greatly shortening the service life of the equipment. Therefore, doing a good job in the daily maintenance of stainless steel linear rail is crucial to ensuring the normal and stable operation of the machine and the machining quality of products.

The following are the daily cleaning and maintenance methods for linear rail assembly:
I. Preparations Before Cleaning
?Tools Required: Dry cotton cloth, lubricating oil (sewing machine oil is recommended, and machine oil is strictly prohibited).

? Linear rail types: The guides of engraving machines are generally divided into linear guides and roller guides. Take the YM series as an example, the X direction uses linear guides, and the Y direction uses roller guides.

II. Cleaning Steps for CNC Linear Slide
?Initial Position Adjustment: Move the laser head to the far right (or left).
?
?Surface Cleaning: Wipe the guide surface repeatedly with a dry cotton cloth until the guide is bright and dust-free.
?
?Lubrication Treatment: Apply a small amount of sewing machine oil to the guideway surface (note that the amount should be moderate to avoid waste or pollution).
?
?Uniform Lubrication: Slowly push the laser head to move left and right several times to make the lubricating oil evenly distributed over the entire stroke of the guide and ensure that all parts are fully lubricated.

III. Cleaning Steps for Roller Guides
?Beam Position Adjustment: Move the beam to the inner side of the machine.

?End Cover Dismantling and Preliminary Cleaning: Open the end covers on both sides of the machine and use a dry cotton cloth to carefully wipe the areas where the Linear Guide rails on both sides are in contact with the rollers to remove the deposited dust and pollutants.

?Comprehensive Cleaning: Slowly move the beam to clean the remaining linear motion guide surfaces in sequence to ensure no missed areas until all the linear guide parts in contact with the rollers are cleaned.

IV. Maintenance Precautions
?Selection of Lubricating Oil: Sewing machine oil must be used to avoid damage to the guides caused by other oils, such as machine oil, due to inappropriate viscosity or composition.

?Cleaning Frequency: Carry out regular cleaning and maintenance according to the dust pollution degree of the equipment use environment (it is recommended to do it at least once a week, and the frequency needs to be increased in a high-pollution environment).

?Operation Force: Avoid using hard objects to scratch the guide surface during cleaning, and act gently when wiping and moving components to prevent damage to the accuracy of the linear motion rail guide.

?Abnormality Inspection: Pay attention to whether there is corrosion, wear, or abnormal noise on the guideway rail surface during the cleaning process. If there are any problems, stop the machine in time for inspection and contact professional personnel for handling.
